7 Secret Steps To Creating A High Traffic Blog Post
Posted on 27. Jun, 2011 by Dereck Arreguin in Internet Marketing

A blog is a little more complex than almost any other form of web property out there. Not only are they more interactive, but they are constantly being updated (the good ones) with fresh new ideas and new content. Plus, as the blogging landscape continues to shift and change, one thing still remains the same. A modern blog is a great way to tie everything together (YouTube, Twitter, Facebook, and Flickr).
Today, it’s not uncommon to find individual blog posts, on no-name websites, to compete with big box brands. Now, blog creators can implement a whole host of interactive material to increase their reach and profitability.
This posting is about the 7 Secret Steps To Creating A Hight Traffic Blog Post. It is my goal in this publication to give you not only a proven layout, but also give you a list of things to set into habit, so that every story you write, every blog posting you publish, will have the best chances to continue to generate traffic over the life of your blog. This will undoubtably help you to leverage your time you spent once to capitalize far into the future.
So let’s begin!
1.) Choose A Topic
Usually the biggest problem for most people, is not knowing what to talk about. More times than not, a blog is not optimized to actually fit a certain theme or provide a specific service. But for the sake of simplicity, we’ll use this blog as the example.
There are 4 main topics that this blog covers.
1.) Tools of the trade pertaining to network marketing / internet marketing
2.) Reviews on related companies and or products
3.) How to tutorials for educational purposes
4.) Interviews with leaders in both industries
All an author must do is, pick a particular category and launch the into the process you are learning about right now.
2.) Research The Topic
Once you’ve chosen a topic to cover, make sure to do the research related to it. This is not to be based off of theory or what you think might be (unless you are some kind of life coach). Must have facts and learn the “hidden” language within the topic its self.
For instance, if you were going to write about a network marketing company, you might want to know the many different products it offers (by their name and ingredients), their location, founders, history, market place, compensation plan and so on.
In this process you will uncover target keywords that would be relevant to company participants and or curious outsiders.
Knowing the “hidden” language within that particular group of people or market place will help to establish you as a credible and reliable source of information. This in turn gives you the perception as an authority figure on the subject.
3.) Write The Article
When writing any article, you should always follow a specific pattern. Just as this blog post has been created, it fits and holds true to the entire 7 steps you are learning about.
However, writing articles is simple and has been around since the start of the internet. Not only is this method of publication timeless, but it also is the core foundation to everything shared across the web, and will be in the future as well.
There are 4 requirements you must include when crafting a powerful article. These four requirements are the following:
- Use a Proper Article Format
- Integrate Copywriting
- Always Have a Call To Action
- Keyword Research
Probably the most important factor of all the steps located on here is none other than keyword research. The whole objective for to as an online entrepreneur / publisher is to do things once and collect ever growing dividends far into the future.
Not only does this build the blog and you as an authoritative figure, but it also helps you to leverage time for cross referencing and ping backs.
It’s more than likely, that while doing your research on your topic (Step 2), you have uncovered a set of keywords or key phrases used by that niche. It is your job to include those keywords into your post and include them in your “post tags” selection prior to publishing your blog.
For a quick breakdown, consider a prior story on this blog called 3 Powerful Ways To Do Keyword Research. There you will discover modern tools (FREE) that you can use to help you find what keywords might be best for your topic and also help you generate more traffic in the future.
8 Underground Tips To Improve Your Blog SEO is a more recent posting showing you some of the ways you can improve your SEO efforts. Please make sure to jump over there and implement these secrets into your arsenal.
4.) Include Social Media Interaction
No doubt, social media is quickly changing the entire landscape as we know it online. More and more search engines are changing their algorithms to include comments and shares or likes as it relates to social acceptance. In more recent times, Google has even announced the Google+, which is said to act much like facebook’s “like” button.
However, when it applies to your blog posting, you must take it a little future. It is suggested that you include a video and or pictures to better grab your prospects attention and or imagination.
Also consider signing up for our Fan Page Renegade Course. You can learn more about it at: http://www.dereckarreguin.com/7-secretsteps-to-creating-a-high-traffic-blog-post/ or www.FPRenengade.com.
5.) Monetize
When finishing the creation process, always remember to have some form of monetization on your blog post. If you are an experienced internet marketer, you might know this as a link to purchase a product or send people to a capture page. This could be in many forms such as banner ads, affiliate laced hyperlinks, or direction telling someone to head to your affiliate link (masked and forwarded of course).
Of course, this “could” be considered a option for most beginner bloggers. So a viable option would be to include Google AdSense on your pages and posts. That way, even as you generate more and more traffic, you can also generate income as those who travel to your site can click on the ads that run on your page (allowing you to take a piece of the action based on the amount the advertiser paid).
However, this is not a suggested method of monetization. The point and purpose of your blog should be to keep as many eyeballs on your site as possible for as long as possible.
6.) Launch
After all 5 steps prior to this one, you are ready to give it a once over and make any small corrections (or large). Always make sure to “Preview” your posting before you publish the content.
Called revising, make sure to finalize the following things prior to pushing the big green button.
1.) Spelling
2.) Proper picture placement
3.) Functioning videos
4.) Make sure all internal links (links that point to other pages on your blog) are up and working
While missing an occasional misspelled word or should one of these areas be lacking, it won’t ruin the blog posting. However, having an issue with more than one of these, and you might risk the authority you’re looking to create and even worse… sending people screaming for the hills.
7.) Broadcast
Finally, after publishing you award winning content, make sure to broadcast it everywhere you know how.
This could and should mean you send out a notice to your subscriber list (learn how to make a list here), syndicate with a tribe (you could use Onlywire), share on facebook and encourage comments and feed back.
As you can see, creating a compelling article / blog posting is not rocket science. And at first glance, it might actually seem as if it could take all day. And by all means, it might! But that’s in the beginning. Be rest assured, the more and more you continue to do this process over and over again, the quicker you will become and the less time you’ll need to win over your audience.

Great article. I am finding that it is not hard to start marketing online with a blog and articles, however, it does take more time than one might think. Keep with it and don’t quit is the strategy I am working with.

Dereck,
These are all very important aspects of creating a high quality blog post. Keywords and Calls To Actions are paramount in my opinion aside from the great content itself!

Great list Dereck, I have found that for articles or blog posts the hardest part is the research more specifically the keywords. The theory itself is easier said than done but with a high competition its not as easy to rank for those keywords. it is something I am working on and hope to have down to a handful of steps and things to look out for, as well as the right tool to do the research I need for that specific keyword.

Dereck, thanks for a great overview of some of the strategies for writing a great blog post. Copyblogger has some great examples for writing good headlines and balancing that with the need to have good keyword research. I also think that it can be helpful for me to have more of a call to action and to be more sales minded (in a good way) when writing my posts.

Hi Dereck:
You have given an excellent blue print for writing a great post. I believe that checking over your post for mistakes, broken links, etc. is such a simple thing but it is also a HUGE thing. Many people are turned off when they click on a link and it doesn’t work.

Dereck,
You have shared so many basic, yet often overlooked, tips for creating powerful blog posts. I often write about topics that I have fully researched, but I may inadvertently not pay attention to using enough keywords – especially in the title. And I have often not really thought about the monetizing aspect – giving a call to action. Most of the other items I often include. That’s why your tips are a strong reminder, not just for beginners, to include all those elements for true success.

Hey Derek ~ Great post. Paying attention to all seven of your bullet points has proved very helpful to me. When I first started blogging I just went to writing and posting. Now I spend time on research, social media (at the suggestion of several interested readers) and keyword research as well. And my oh my what a difference it all makes when you add just a few if not all of these things.
I’m going back to read your article on Keyword research because I believe you can never know too much.
Thanks.

Hi Derreck,
Talking about blogs, I want to be very frank here, I have challenges in choosing my topic all the time. I do not understand why I must have a topic first before I could write out the content even if I know that the article is related to my previous post. Maybe, more time needed because I started blogging not long ago.
Today, I am lucky to stop by your post ! This is very informative and the tips given are definitely great !
Thank you
Cheers

Hi Dereck, loved the post btw and felt compelled to comment. Getting started is definitely the hardest thing and you definitely included the hardest thing first – how to choose a topic! But after that you systematically broke it down so that everything seemed like child’s play. I’ll revisit this on my ‘writer’s block’ days, thanks

Getting my blog to stay on topic is my biggest challenge.
I have had days when every article I started writing ended up as being off topic.
But the longer I write the better I get at starting and ending on the same topic as my major blog topic.
Thanks for the tips Dereck

Very thorough article! The only add on I might offer is to remember that the work doesn’t stop once the blog is up and running. It takes time to build a online business (just like one that’s bricks and mortar) and more often than people might think, once you’ve been at it awhile you end up adjusting your target market, or sometimes find you’re real interest lies in a completely different direction. It’s a great journey!
