8 “Underground” Tips To Improve Your Blog SEO

Posted on 13. Jun, 2011 by in Internet Marketing

With so much information out there on where to start and what to do, it’s no wonder why people are so lost when it comes to properly setting up of their blog.

People obviously want exposure and traffic, because both ultimately lead up to more leads and possibly more income. But what are the actions and the functions required to get the job done?

Why do so many take the first step of starting a website/ blog and not complete the most important part, Search Engine Optimization?

Well, in this short article, you will discover 8 “Underground” tips to help you with your internet communication and SEO organic ranking. When you set your blog up correctly, it’s much like an antenna that broadcasts messages to search engines to identify your page or posting.

Our goal here is to make sure the antenne sends out a longer and wider signal and at the same time demystify the SEO strategy as something complicated and difficult to learn or implement.

Lets identify what you are going to need in order to give you the best chances.

1.) Website Name & Description – A proper website name that applies to your niche. If you use your name like DereckArreguin.com, you need to identify with the search engines on what your blog is about. You can do this by setting up the keywords and phrases that identify your market within the description tags.

2.) Plugins – You need proper plugin tools in order to make sure your message is being broadcasted properly. The most popular ways to do this is by offering readers the opportunity to share your content to others around them. These might be social media plugins and comment threads. If you are looking for specific plugins that allow you to broadcast your message, make surre to view and apply my list on the Best WordPress Plugins for 2011.

3.) Keywords – Proper keyword identification and application is by far is the most important part of this entire process. It would be a share to attempt at creating content and tag it with keywords that are based on no facts of relevant traffic. Most people just throw out garbage tags “hoping” that they gather attention. Most of the time, long tale keywords will prove more effective than short word bold terms. Make sure to read my posting that exposes 3 Powerful Ways To Do Keyword Research.

Example: Short tail = Internet, Long tail = Internet Marketing With A Blog

4.) Permalinks – Another way to increase your exposure is to set your permalinks correctly. That way, the actual title of your page (that is formatted around the keyword you are attempting to generate traffic from) is in the URL. This will help search engines to identify the content and direct people to it. To learn how to set your permalinks, make sure to read How To Set Permalinks Correctly In WordPress.

5.) Backlinks – Backlinks will pay a major role in your “votes” that tell search engines that your particular page or post is relevant and of good quality. Now there are plenty of ways to increase your backlinks, but here are just two powerful ways to adopt today.

A.) Forums – The key here is to set up your signature file with a link your website. Now every comment you post in the forum will have a link pointing right back to your site. Two of my most favorite forums to utilize is:

1.) The Warrior Forum – A forum for dedicated online entrepreneurs.

2.) Better Networker - Forum for business professionals all around the globe. Most frequently a landing ground for new Network Marketers who are looking to get started online.

B.) Comments – The purpose behing comments is really two fold. The first purpose is to obviously leave a comment in hopes of driving more traffic from the site where you left you comment to your page, and secondly to get another back link. Remember, for every backlink you get, it’s a mini vote telling search engines that you are a reputable website.

6.) Tools of The Trade - You need a way to track all of your results and hits as people find you from all over the web. The best way to set this whole process up is by linking your website to Google Analytics. To simply set up your account, make sure to add the analytics plugin found in the Best WordPress Plugins for 2011 article or head over to Google Analytics to set up a free account.

Another reason why Analytics is important, is because it also provide specific data such as time on site, bounce rate and page views. All of these functions play a part in search engines being able to identify good content for their users. improving in these areas will undoubtably help you in traffic and organic listings.

7.) Interlinking – Look at most of the links within this blog post and you’ll see first hand a great deal of intralinking. These are use to help readers navigate to other pages within your site that are relevant to the topic at hand. These are important because they keep eyeballs on your site longer and increases the chance for others to share your content. Plus, search engines follow these links gaining a better perspective of what your site is all about.

8.) Tribe Syndication – The last and finial tip for today is probably the most important for more modern terms. It’s none other than syndication. Syndication is a term meaning the spread of news (for all intensive purposes). We do this by allowing our readers to help spread the message. By simply providing Facebook Share buttons and ReTweet or Digg buttons on our site, we can quietly recruit our readership to help increase our social credibility.

Incidentally, this happens to be a major focus for Google. Since their most recently algorithm change and the implementation of Google+1, it now seems as if social credibility will now play a major part in tomorrows most popular websites.

There are two major groups that I have teamed up in order to improve traffic and outraech.

1.) Team Syndication Association (TSA) – A group of online entrepreneurs and educators who band together every week and share, comment and like others content. There is an application process in order to join them, but the reward of meeting new people and learning new things is priceless.

2.) TribePro – Another tribe concept that is rather massive. This is a tribe network of smaller tribes to auto-syndicate each others content via a point system. There you can have hundreds or thousands of other people who automatically syndicate your information automatically as you auto submit your most recent article straight to the tribe.

All of these methods are not optional in todays online marketing world. You need to have a plan of action in order to carry these functions out. But here is a tip, there are plenty of tools out there to help you plan and set all of this up. Plus, after actively participating for a couple weeks, what at first seems like a chore, turns into such automated process that it almost takes on a life of it’s own.

My suggestion, make sure to map out your plan of action and give yourself a couple hours to make sure everything is up and running before you spend too much quality time on blog posts and website design that most would never know even exists. Your goal is to spread the message and be as efficient as possible. If need be, make sure to mind map it out and make sure to follow it step by step.

If you are interested in Mind Mapping Software, might I suggest you consider Mindmiester. It’s free and it’s a powerful way to really make a plan of action that’s easy to follow and implement. Your success depends on it.

To the stars and beyond!

    Hi Dereck,

Search engine Optimization is, as you state, one of the most important aspects of building out our blog sites. You’ve listed some very valuable tips for improving SEO rankings which include:
    1) using keywords in our tags and description
    2) plugins for broadcasting our messages
    3) proper KeyWord application
    4) getting good quality backlinks from forums and authority blogs
    5) tracking tools to measure our results
    6) internal linking
    7) some form of tribe syndication

Keeping our tactics varied and including a mix of different strategies is important in building our search engine rankings.

I think plugins are the best, its an easy solution for someone who wants to get something done quick and easy with out dreading the tech stuff. Some people fail to realize that it is in fact possible to have too many plugins and can in fact slow down and cause problems with ones blog.

I have been wondering about interlinking- if its easier to manually do it or to do it via plugins. I wonder if a plugin will really aid in a blogs SEO effort where as manually linking anchor text is guaranteed but much more time consuming.

I see you use both a plugin and manually interlink what are your thoughts on one method over the other?

Hi Derek, at the outset of this post you asked ‘Why do so many take the first step of starting a website/ blog and not complete the most important part, Search Engine Optimization’. The answer I think is because most new bloggers do not understand enough about it or how to go about it. You certainly went a long way to providing most of the answers here.
Very comprehensive, Great post, thanks :)

    Great article!
Do you use the RB internal linking plugin for intralinking? You didn’t mention that one in your plugin post.
I didn’t know about the Thank you later plugin.
You put a lot of work into this post.

    Hi Dereck,

Great coverage of the top SEO points to cover as well as a great example of internal linking. I find that so many people think about (and yet stop at) keywords for SEO when that is only a small part of the story especially these days when interaction also counts.

Please do keep up the great work. I enjoy reading your posts.

    Hey Dereck!

Awesome information you release here in very short time and place. These 8points alone followed by the word can help in a short period of time propel visitors to your site with the possibility to connect and funnel leads. I love the Intralinking strategy to be able to even build authority pages within your own site and if this page is then as well targeted with back links then you can rise really quickly up in the organic search results. Thx again for the massive value you presenting us here and I can only suggest many more people to follow your advice.

    All the best,

    Alex

Derek, the keywords are important and the plug-ins are nice but I think you hit it on the head when you said that syndication is the key to having success on your blog particularly as the Internet becomes more social.

Indeed getting the right clicks and feedback from others will really help your blog along.

Thank you for sharing this. I appreciate very much the ideas and help.

    Hi Dereck,

That was a most informative article. I will have a look at your list of plugins but the one thing I have always felt is that there is always a risk for a surplus of plugins in a blog and it is not always clear which ones are really needed. Thanks for suggesting tribepro in addition to tsa. It’s something I have had on my mind to do for a while. I will have a closer look now.

Once again thank your your article. Of course, one of the way to see how a blog should be set up is to look at how you have set yours up! :)

  23. Hello Dereck,

You present some great tips on blog optimization. I started my first blog on blogger just to get my feet wet. I did not have a clue of blog, let alone seo optimization.

Then i moved to WP.com, still in practicing mode. No clue on keywords or anything.

Finally, after hearing others talk about the need to be on a self hosted blog platform, I moved over to wp.org and purcahsed a course all about wp.

I learned how to best use many of the plugins and tips you mention here.

I recently joined a Tribe and am learning more each day.

Blogging is a learning experience, you justhave to stick with it.
