Email Marketing Tips: How To Create A Custom Opt In Form With Aweber
Posted on 06. Jul, 2011 by Dereck Arreguin in HowTo

Using an email auto responder service such as Aweber provides you (as a marketer or business owner) to communicate with and generate leads on a regular and consistant basis. As with most professional auto responder services, Aweber provides custom pre-made templates or users to place on blogs or websites to help generate leads.
However, what most marketers forget is, going that little bit extra to stand out amongst the crowd, even if they offer the same thing. Often called “branding” in the attraction marketing arena, Aweber provides a way to use their platform to create your own custom forms and applications.
In this short video, I’ll be exposing how to use a custom image that you have either created or have decided to use (see create custom banner with keynote video) as a background for your optin form.
Here I expose to you how to resize you opt in form with the proper tools so you can get more done.
A few notes I want to leave you with today are the following:
1.) Make sure to uncheck the link button between your top and bottom dimensions. If you don’t, then your image will be limited to the same size for both. This will prove to a problem if you are limited with space and or wanting to keep your entire form above the fold.
2.) Test your images a few times before finalizing the form. In the video, I had to cut out a “suggested field” to make room for my custom button on the image itself.
3.) Consider creating a horizontal banner with the same type of field. Just as we resized the from inserts vertically, you can do the same horizontally. This will provide flexibility for you as you look to squeeze custom offers into specific blog posts or otherwise.

Thanks a lot Dereck, I was driving crazy with my aweber form and no matter what I did, I couldn’t get rid of the padding. Your tip about de-selecting the link in between helped me. Awesome blog with useful tips, bookmarked and will return for more. Please keep up the great work!

You explained it good, but it’s still not what I’m looking for – I’m looking how to create opt in form in big horizontal banner, much like Your image in top of page, but what You explained is again about vertical opt in form….

Salvis,
I still have yet to find a vertical opt in form that proves to be skinny (like I’m sure you might be interested in). I still can’t figure out how to make the entry fields vertical, but I will continue my search and create another posting when I do.
Till then, keep up the good work and come back and let me know if you find out anything.

Entry fields don’t have to be vertical
But the form should be the hight of both entry fields x 500 pixels or so wide….i.e not usual 300 x 450 but 600 x 250 with images or text on left and entry fields usual size on right!

Right, lol!
I was talking about horizontal not vertical, my bad! Keep looking.

Dereck,
That was great. Thank you so much for explaining how to create a custom opt in box. I have attempted them before and often run into a glitch somewhere in the process. I will return to your video again for sure.

Dereck, this is a great tutorial; you presented this very well! I LOVE Aweber and the great forms it creates for opt-ins. I would love to know what you use for your tutorials; Camtasia? I would love to know how to do the grey out of the screen when you want to highlight something and also how you do the zooming in and out. Thanks!

The screen capture software I used is actually called Screenflow. Funny that you should mention the actual things I show in a new tutorial I just created. Make sure to use the search bar on the right when looking for “ScreenFlow” and it will pop up.

Dereck, thanks for the awesome suggestion! I will definitely look into it. Do you have experience with Camtasia, do you know how they compare? Also you might know, I’m trying to find a way to get a “Picture in Picture” effect so that it can record through my webcam as well as my screen; does Screenflow have this capability or do you know another program that does? I suppose it doesn’t have to be able to record both at the same time, but it would be nice

Dereck – you are my HERO! Creating a custom opt in form has been one of those things floating around in the back of my mind for months but I just had no clue how to do it and never found a tutorial at Aweber. You not only showed me how, but I think I can actually DO this! Yee ha – weekend project … thanks so much.
