Hey Dereck! Thank you so much for the easy explicit instructions on setting up permalinks. I am not a techy person, so I welcome any training I can find to make it go quicker for me. And then I can share with others too, or send them to your video. Plus, it was sweet and short, but you got your message across!
    Cheers!

    Hi Derek,

Thanks for instructions for correctly configuring permalinks. Inserting this code in the settings does increase your posts and pages to rank for their key terms and phrases. I already use it on my blog; however there are a lot of new bloggers that may not be aware of these settings. Something so simple can be so powerful!

    Hey Dereck,

Thanks for sharing this tutorial and important tip.

“Anything worth doing, is worth doing well” and this is no exception.

Whether you are a Blogger who is just starting out or a more experienced blogger and you don’t do this consistently, it WILL make a difference in your traffic results.

It is so easy to set up on your dashboard and easy ti implement, that it would be like leaving money on the table, or in this case traffic on the table, if you don’t use this strategy.

    keep sharing these great tips,
    Marc

Great tutorial Dereck! I’ve found time and time again, that having correct permalinks, pays off in the search engines.

After all, if you have just numbers in your permanent links, how many of those numbers are going to appear in the search engines when people are looking for content you’ve written about?

    bye for now, Julieanne

Good, clear explanation Dereck. I’ve done this for so long that I had forgotten how it normally looks in a wordpress blog. Thanks for the reminder so I can help others

Always a pleasure to read your posts, Dereck.

I can’t imagine trying to get anywhere blogging without knowing the tools of the trade, like permalinks.

Trying to work without this is like trying to write a novel without a pen or paper. It can be done… but good luck trying!

    Hi Dereck,
so good to see your video.
I found with my one I needed to make the htaccess file writeable, which meant putting the code that was provided into my htaccess file in the backoffice of my host.

I also did learn that the permalink usually gets set to the title of the post but you can adjust that.

    Great post. Thank you.
    Cheers

    Awesome Derek,
These are things EVERY blogger should know. It is quite confusing when we first start, but little by little we build our blogs and back-links the correct way. I’ve seen so many that are just add pages and it is a turn off for everyone. Our blog is our central hub. There is always need for improvement.
    Thanks for the helpful information.

Love simple and straightforward posts like this one! Thanks for sharing this really short video Dereck. I remember first starting out with my blog and always wondering why my links were so unpretty and “how does everyone else get to customize theirs?”

You will really help out many people that come across your post in customizing their post links.

Thanks and looking forward to the next post!

Hi Derek, this is just the kind of information that left me completely flummaxed when I started out online.

First I had no clue that any of this stuff ever existed (that was the ‘blissful ignorance’ stage, except I never got any traffic or visitors to my blog!)

Then, I understood vaguely that there were little seo ‘tips and tricks’ that some people knew about and that was how come they were building raving communities online … I just had no idea about any of the ‘jargon’ people were throwing at me.

Wish I had known about your blog back then – it would have saved so many headaches! … A ‘must stop shop’ for internet newbies and technophobes – thank you :)

This is one of those things that everyone should know how to do if they want to get the most out of their blog. There are so many small tips like this that can mean the difference between having a successful blog or just another dead piece of real estate on the internet.

If you’re going to build a blog as a way to attract traffic, sell things and get people on your mailing list, it makes a lot of sense to find out all you can about increasing your visibility on the search engines.

Thanks for this really helpful information! I’m working on developing a new (2nd) blog, and realized recently that there are many things I did setting up my first blog that I’ve now effectively managed to forget the “how to” … yikes. This was a great refresher – thanks!

      Hello Dereck,

When I first started my blog, I had set up my permalinks the way you demonstrated in your video. A couple of weeks ago, I changed my theme but in the process it became a revamp and lost a lot of the settings. I would suggest that once your settings are done, to either create a screenshot or make a note, just in case. I’m sure they are preserved in a back up and my guess is that they should stay in place with a theme change also. Regardless, I remember reading this article a few weeks ago and by passed it because “I was already set up.” Soon after I discovered I had to redo settings. I am grateful you created this article. I was able to go back validate that the setting were correctly installed.

The instructions are also helpful when teaching a partner tips for their blogs!

      Thanks.

    Hey Dereck,

As a beginner blogger I get caught up in the terminalogy. It is like you need another dictionary for all the terms. Thanks for the great information about what a permalink is. I never really knew what it ment.
