Simon Sinek: “If You Don’t Understand People, You Don’t Understand Business”

Posted on 15. Aug, 2011 by in Motivational

Short, seemingly quiet and slim would be a great way to describe a man that has forever changed my view on a few things.

At first, I didn’t know much about this gentleman or even why I should be listening to him. But I was at a major Marketing Conference with thousands of just as eager entrepreneurs hanging on the edge of their seats to hear what the next speaker had to say.

He stood on stage and within a few short minutes, I knew that this guy was delivering a very special and powerful message.

That was last October in Vegas at the Master Marketer Event where I had a chance to meet and hang with Brian Fanale and Norbert Orlewicz. There, he helped us to discover what the term “WHY” in our industry was, and why it was so rarely focused on in the right way.

Up until that point, the description of the first step in this industry (Home Based Business), was to identify the reason why you wanted a business in the first place. What Simon Sinek helped us to understand was… that our WHY had to be much bigger and deeper than that!

He simply asked…

“What made you get out of bed in the morning? Why did you, instead of laying in bed all day, decide to get up and operate in the this world? Because if it wasn’t to better the lives of other people, then it’s time and energy wasted.”

That’s why, when I ran into another one of Simon’s videos, I knew I needed to share some of the power that this (revenge of the nerds looking cast member) had to say. All I can say is… be prepared to be inspired and have your perspective changed on what you stand for, and where you are in your business.

Just as a note, the first 2 1/2 minutes is amazing… just listen.

We need trust.

When we’re surrounded by people who believe what we believe and trust starts to emerge and we trust them and they trust us… we’re more willing to take risks.

We’re more willing to experiment (which requires failure).

We’re more willing to explore and go somewhere where no-one has ever gone before with the confidence that if we fail, if we trip over, if we turn our backs, that those within our community, those who we trust and who trust us, will look after us while we’re gone and will pick us up  when we fall over.

Will help us when we’re hurt. Our very survival depends on it.

Also known of his powerful TED talks Simon Sinek delivers motivational speeches across the globe. In fact, his personal story (surprising enough) may not be all that much different from all of ours. Very powerful indeed and reason enough to listen to the whole thing. Listen, enjoy, learn and grow!

  2. I’ll be honest and admit that having read your article I decided I would watch the first 2 1/2 minutes and then form an opinion on the comment section. But after a couple of minutes, I was hooked and then watched the whole video. That was as you say a truly inspirational message.

Dereck, Simon Sinek is a person that I will be looking out for in the future just like you do.

When I think about building relationships as a basis for trust all begins in the womb before we are born, we have a bond with our mother which the vast majority of people never lose. She helped us, in fact she was everything to us.

If we can offer ourselves to help other people in a similar way to a mother helping her child, we will surely get the trust of far more people.

    Dereck,

Wow! I don’t usually watch long videos, but I had to watch this one from beginning to end. Very powerful stuff here. The wonderful principle of trust built through common beliefs and values, and helping others as well, is true not only of internet marketing but of church communities too. I found some good insights here.

By the way, posted by someone who takes their time to help another tribe member, this video is definitely congruent with your own beliefs and practices!

    Hi Dereck,

Thanks for sharing this brilliant and truly inspirational video; it is filled with so much valuable information and a great resource to review again and again. I love the question: “What are we doing to help the person next to us?” because that is where we gain our feeling of fulfilment! Being our true, authentic self is vital to consistently building trusting relationships. Just being ourselves and maintaining human interaction really is a beautiful thing, especially today in our industry where it’s so easy to “get lost” behind a computer.

To experiment and fail and trust that those around will be ok with that is truly a great ability. We so often dont’ trust because we are afraid of the outcome. When we build groups that have the same beliefs and values, in order to “help” each other fail we can become great. I see this with the community of people in my classes.. together we are a great and accomplish much… Our community is strong! I have heard Simon before and I truly enjoy what he shares. If you don’t know people… well good luck… I am working on “knowing” people! Great post.
